Emaar Canada’s Dunbar Seniors Housing Development Approved by City Council

December 1, 2009

On December 1, 2009 Vancouver City Council approved Emaar Canada’s rezoning application to create a 66 - unit seniors’ market housing development at the corner of West 41st Avenue and Balaclava Street. The application had received a resounding endorsement from the City’s Urban Design Panel, and was strongly recommended by staff.

The development will provide much-needed independent seniors living in the Dunbar area, and is based on an innovative coop housing model which has been operating successfully in Boston. The proposal was lauded for its high-quality, innovative architecture, its leading-edge sustainability features, and heritage retention and upgrading of community facilities at neighbouring Knox Church.

Brook coordinated the work of the project team, including Smith Gill Architects of Chicago, CEI Architecture of Vancouver and Bunt & Associates Transportation Engineers. We also participated in an extensive community consultation process as well as negotiations with City of Vancouver staff.

We congratulate our client, Emaar Canada Ltd., and wish them every success in the realization of this major achievement on Vancouver’s west side.
